In very much the same way as in his first letter to the Corinthians, Paul offered a statement of hope in Christ’s working on our behalf. In 2 Corinthians 1:10, Paul wrote, “He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.” Just prior to this statement, Paul had mentioned the affliction that he and his companions had experienced in Asia. He explained that they were “so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death” (2 Corinthians 1:8-9). But God delivered them.
Paul’s statement in verse 10, “He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us,” is one of faith and hope. That’s why we see his next statement, “On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again.” Paul is certain of God’s faithfulness. He knows that God will save.
It is helpful to think about all that God has done for us in life. Reflecting on His mighty deeds bolsters our faith and assurance in Him. We ought to have such a hope, such an eager expectation of God’s work in our lives that we can say with Paul, “He delivered us, and He will deliver us. On Him we have set our hope that He will deliver us again.”
